Disinfectants are validated on clean surfaces. Applied over dust, grease or biofilm, the active ingredient binds to the soil instead of the pathogen, and the claimed kill rate simply does not happen.

Contact time is the second most common failure. A product rated at ten minutes needs to remain visibly wet for ten minutes. Wiping it dry after thirty seconds converts a validated disinfection into a cosmetic one.
